Details
Incorporated under Special Act (S.A.) December 5, 1865. On Dec 21, 1926, the bank was registered as a limited company under the Companies Act, 1892 (S.A.). In 1919 the Australian Deposit and Mortgage Bank Limited was acquired. The company was associated with the formation of Finance Corp. of Australia Ltd. in December 1954. On May 31 1962 the Bank of Adelaide Savings Bank Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary, commenced operations.
Operating principally in South Australia, the company also had branches in each capital city as well as Dandenong (Vic.), Fremantle (W.A.), Woden and Belconnen (A.C.T), Townsville (Qld) and London, and agents and correspondence through out the world. Prior to its takeover by A.N.Z Limited at the end of 1979, the Bank had 140 branches and agencies.
On November 30, 1979, The Bank of Adelaide became a wholly owned subsidiary of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited following the approval of the Supreme Court of South Australia to the Scheme of Arrangement relating to the capital of the Bank of Adelaide. The banking business of the Bank of Adelaide group was transferred to ANZ Banking Group on October 1, 1980.
