Details
Peter Degraves, an Englishman, built the Cascade Brewery in 1824, on a land grant of 2,500 acres on the slopes of Mt. Wellington, in Hobart, Tasmania. It is the oldest brewery still operating in Australia. The Cascade Brewery Company Ltd was formed to purchase the assets and business of Degraves and was incorporated in Tasmania on 26 May 1883. In 1933, Cascade Brewery acquired Traders Pty Ltd and in 1957 took over J. Boag and Son (1911) Ltd. Other acquisitions have been Burgess Bros Ltd (1964), Irvine and McEachern Pty Ltd (1970), Port Huon Fruitgrowers Co-operative Ltd (1971), and Chancellor H. & S. Pty Ltd (1983).
Control of the company changed hands in January 1984 when Industrial Equity Ltd., acquired a controlling interest in the company.
In January 1985 the company entered the field of tourism with the acquisition of a 72.8% interest in Four Seasons Ltd, the largest motel operator in Tasmania with outlets at Cairns (Queensland), Mildura (Victoria) and Yulara - Ayers Rock (N.T).
Following the successful takeover bid by Cascade (Tasmania) Pty Ltd, the company was removed from the Australian Stock Exchange on June 26, 1985.
