The company was incorporated on May 8 1925. The company was formed to acquire Myer's (Australia) Ltd. in a reconstruction.
The company acquired several businesses to consolidate its leading position in the retail field. Marshall's Ltd of Adelaide in 1928, was renamed Myer Emporium (South Australia) and operated as a separate public company for many years until the public shareholding was acquired in 1966. Other companies taken over were McWhirters Ltd. of Brisbane (1955); Allan & Stark Ltd. of Brisbane, and Brownells Ltd of Hobart (1959); Farmers (Holdings) Ltd. of Sydney and its subsidiary Western Stores Ltd (1960); Lindsay & McKenzie Pty. Ltd, Geelong-based soft goods chain in 1968; Bairds Ltd. of Perth (1969); Country Road Pty Ltd., San Remo Liquor Pty. Ltd. and Red Rooster Pty Ltd (1981); Grace Bros. Holdings Limited (1983), Western Australian department store retailer Boans Ltd (1984).
The company also pursued an active policy of new store development including major regional shopping centres and the entry into discounting through its 'Target' division.
The company was removed from the Australian Stock Exchange on January 15, 1986, after successful takeover bid by Silbury Pty Ltd. (associates of G. J. Coles and Coy Ltd). Retail stores still operate under the Myer name as pat of the Coles Myer group.
