Formed in 1887 from the Brisbane Permanent Building and Investment Society. The company subsequently absorbed the City and Suburban Building Society (1921] and the Queensland Deposit Bank Ltd [1931]. In 1932 a major proportion of the business of the Federal Deposit Bank Ltd (in voluntary liquidation) was purchased. In 1970 the company the name Bank of Queensland Ltd.

Details

The Brisbane Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society was formed in August 1874. The society's constitution was remodelled in 1887 and a company structure was adopted. It was incorporated in Queensland on September 2, 1887. It amalgamated with the City and Suburban Building Society on March 23, 1921. On December 15 1931, the company absorbed the Queensland Deposit Bank Limited. It purchased the greater portion of the business of Federal Deposit Bank Ltd. (in voluntary liquidation) in March 1932. In 1942 the company received a license to operate as a trading bank.

A takeover bid from Lombard Banking Limited of London in September 1958, was unsuccessful. In October 1960, the company sponsored the formation of Permanent Finance Corporation Ltd, in which it providing 40% of the initial paid capital (800,000 ordinary shares).

In May 1970 the company changed its name to the Bank of Queensland Limited.
