The company was formed to amalgamate the businesses of Gordon & Gotch Pty. Ltd and Gordon & Gotch (Queensland) Ltd, which commenced operations in 1853. The company was incorporated in Victoria on August 5, 1919. In January 1979 the Angus and Robertson Bookshops were acquired. Through this acquisition the activities of the Group included 5 retail book and newsagency shops in P.N.G. and 30 retail bookshops and 42 franchise bookshops throughout Australia. In December 1981, the company acquired a Melbourne based travel agency, Mercury World Travel.
In April 1981 the company changed its name to Gordon and Gotch Limited. On October 8 1986 the company was taken over by Herald and Weekly Times Limited.
