Summary
A private company set up to build and operate a railway service between Melbourne and Geelong. The first service, between Geelong and Duck Ponds (now Lara) began in late1856. By mid 1857 the line had been extended to Greenwich (now Newport). The company ran into financial difficulties and was purchased by the State Government in 1860.
