The business started operating as a Land Mortgage Institution under South Australian legislation, The State Advances Act 1895.
In 1984 the bank merged with the Savings Bank of South Australia and traded as the State Bank of South Australia.
In 1991/92 the bank faced financial collapse. The Sate Government decided to split the bank into non-performing and performing parts. The non-performing operations were retained as government debt. The performing operations were acquired by Advance Bank as the Bank of South Australia (trading as Bank SA).
